Blind rescue dogs help author see life differently
Inspires Yvonne Harper’s “Blind Faith” tales of adopted special need dogs
SEATTLE – February 3, 2010 -- It seems unlikely that two little blind dogs could help anyone see their life’s purpose, but for Yvonne Harper that’s exactly what Twinkle and Kizmit did for her. Blind Faith, Harper’s debut book, is bursting with photographs and inspiring stories of not only her special need dogs, but others that have faced and overcome many adversities. More importantly it encourages to look beyond perfection when seeking an animal companion.
In Blind Faith ($15.95, Infinity Publishing), Harper, a photography enthusiast, captures the dogs’ innate essence, rather than dwelling on their physical or behavioral disabilities. “It’s shameful how many dogs are abused and abandoned every year. To provide ‘forever homes’ for them, it’s important for us to see these dogs for who they are and not for what they lack,” says Harper. “This understanding helps us recognize their many adoption rewards.”
Both of Harper’s dogs, Twinkle and Kizmit, lost their eyes due to trauma and their eyelids were permanently sewn closed. Witnessing these fearless dogs charge through the darkness with no self pity changed the way Harper views the world. Blind Faith is the result of her personal canine journey.
This profound impact inspired Harper to shed light on other special need rescue dogs, and share the positive influences they have on the families who adopt them. “Although these dogs present their families with challenges, they also bring many blessings and life lessons,” says Eleni Naslund, owner of Furbaby Rescue in Washington State.
Blind Faith’s stories document the contagious courage and optimism of its subjects and their families. “And Kizmit has become something of a local celebrity,” says Harper. “Hopefully, through Blind Faith his spirit and those of the other dogs will be contagious and even broaden the common perception of perfection.”
Yvonne Harper is a native of Scotland who now calls the Pacific Northwest home. She attended art college in Seattle and lives with her husband, Jason, their cat, Sydney, and their blind dog Kizmit. Harper’s cherished memories of her first blind dog, Twinkle, inspired the Blind Faith project.
